05/25/09 -

It's obvious why Angel's ex-people named her Angel, because it suits her personality perfectly. This tiny girl has been very gentle with every human and dog she's met (as well as a chicken on a leash). It's not so obvious - beyond the usual excuse of "moving someplace that doesn't take dogs" - why they dumped this precious 11-year old dog after she clearly has given many litters of puppies. Angel was shivering at the Manhattan shelter and took over an hour to look at the volunteer who picked her up, but a massage with a doggy mitt in Central Park calmed her, got rid of a lot of loose hair, and convinced her that it was ok to sip some water. Soon a sad story turned into a heart-warming profile of Boxer resilience. At the pet store, Angel realized that life was looking up and took some chicken treats with gusto. Her appetite has been good since then. It was only a matter of hours before her little nubbin started wiggling and she asked for a belly rub which produced a leg kick and happy sneezes. By the next day we were getting play bows and little excited dances which you can see on the video below. She's quite spry despite her reported age.

So she's clearly figured out that she's in good hands. AABR's veterinarians are evaluating a heart murmur and some lumps and bumps, but her energy and spirits are excellent.

Angel is petite, at just under 39 pounds. Even after she gains the extra weight that she needs she'll still be a delicate little Boxer. She knows "Sit" and we're working on "Stay." She clearly has been trained not to get up on furniture. Angel is a dream to walk. She doesn't pull on the leash, but she trots along with the cutest little prance, and she absolutely loves going out for a stroll --which is especially exciting for her since her former family reported that they never took her outside. (We're not sure how she took care of "business" that way, but we can say that Angel IS house trained.) They reported that she was good with kids, which has been true of the small children she's met in the park so far.

Apart from her weight, it's hard to believe that she's just come out of the shelter; on her first full day of freedom, she enjoyed basking in the sun and was very well behaved despite all of the tempting food at a picnic with little dogs, big dogs and lots of people. She takes a few minutes to warm up to large men but is fine very quickly once she knows them. Angel is in a temporary foster home but needs a longer-term foster or forever home. Please consider making this sweet and dainty girl part of your family.

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
